BHP sets blasting record

The barriers to adoption highlight the importance of planning when considering and trialling new innovations. In Dec 2019 BHP set a world record at the time by initiating a blast that detonated 4.7 million cubic metres of overburden using 2,194 tonnes of bulk explosives, comprised 8,144 detonators, loaded into 3,899 drill holes over a period of 14 days.1 As the industry demonstrates the viability of larger and more complex blasts, this can only be executed through a whole of system approach to building confidence within the operational team responsible for the safety of the equipment, performance of the explosive, and certainty of supply.
