ICSV aims to reduce the impacts on safety, efficiency, and license to operate produced by existing mining vehicles. Specifically, the project focuses on three areas: greenhouse gas emissions, diesel particulate matter (DPM), and vehicle collisions.
Since its establishment in 2018, the project has leveraged the ICMM’s network of twenty-seven mining companies and twenty OEMs to deploy technologies that minimise the impact of vehicle collisions and diesel particulates by 2025. ICSV expects the development of the first emission free surface vehicles by 2040.1
The ICSV is developing a series of technology roadmaps and an information sharing platform that allows for knowledge and research sharing between OEMs, operators, and the broader industry. This platform makes available specific, technical research and provides guidelines on technologies such as collisions avoidance, maintenance, and battery-electric vehicle adaption.2 In this way, the project helps manage the R&D risk encountered by OEMs, by providing clarity on requirements, progressive milestones, and nascent industry standards.
ICSV provides a case study for how operators can encourage OEM and supply chain development by providing clarity and detail, alongside the advantages of linking near-term improvements in operational safety with longer-term, aspirational zero emission goals.
